Frost Aster (Symphyotrichum pilosum)

Symphyotrichum pilosum, or Frost Aster, is a perennial plant in the aster family. It grows naturally in central and eastern North America and has many local names like Hairy White Oldfield Aster and Steelweed. It grows from 2 inches to over 5 feet tall, usually 8 inches to 4 feet. Frost Aster blooms from late summer to late fall, ending in October in northern areas and December farther south.

This plant thrives in tough spots like old fields, salted roadsides, railroads, pastures, landfills, and quarries. It’s less common in prairies, open woods, limestone areas, and rare in wetlands. Some grow on former glacial debris, showing soil adaptability. As a late bloomer, it attracts many native pollinators in the season’s final days.
