Ozark Sundrops (Oenothera macrocarpa)

Oenothera macrocarpa is the scientific name for the species of plant that goes by many regional names, including Ozark Sundrops, Bigfruit Evening Primrose, Missouri Evening Primrose, or simply Missouri Primrose. Ozark Sundrops are a striking species of flowering plant within the Onagraceae family, commonly known as the Evening Primrose Family. This plant is native to northeast Mexico and the south-central United States, where it is typically found thriving in calcareous prairies—unique ecosystems characterized by soils that are mostly or partly composed of calcium carbonate, meaning they contain lime or have a chalky texture.

Ozark Sundrops have large, cup-shaped flowers up to 5 inches wide have four bright canary yellow petals and a mild fragrance. Blooming abundantly from early to mid-summer, each flower lasts one day, opening in the evening and closing by morning. Night-flying moths, including sphinx hawk moths, mainly pollinate them, aiding in plentiful reproduction.
