Amethyst Shooting Star (Dodecatheon amethystinum)
Amethyst Shooting Star (Dodecatheon amethystinum)
Amethyst Shooting Star, or Jeweled Shooting Star, are the more commonly used names to describe this rate ephemeral beauty.
Featuring purple to pink five-parted flowers with fused petals pointing down, forming a tube with maroon, yellow, and white rings.
Unlike the more common Midland Shooting Star, this species grows only in the limited areas of the limestone bluffs in the Upper Midwest Driftless region and parts of the Upper Appalachians.
Rare and at risk Amethyst Shooting Star needs protection. Growing between 4-18" tall, this species prefers medium soil, and thrives in shade or sun, drawing in pollinators with a pleasant scent as it blooms.
