Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis)

Sambucus canadensis is the scientific name for the species more commonly known simply as Elderberry, or by its other names such as American Black Elderberry, Canada Elderberry, or Common Elderberry. This plant is a deciduous shrub that can grow quite tall, reaching heights of up to 20 feet.

The leaves of Elderberry are arranged in opposite pairs and are pinnate, typically featuring five to nine individual leaflets. Each leaflet measures approximately 4 inches in length and about 2 inches in width. During the summer months, Elderberry produces large corymbs of white flowers that measure between 8 and 12 inches in diameter and stand prominently above the foliage.

Each individual flower is relatively small, about 3⁄16 to 1⁄4 inch in diameter, with a characteristic five-petal structure. By the fall season, the shrub bears its fruit, which consists of dark purple to nearly black berries about 3 to 5 millimeters in diameter. These berries are formed in drooping clusters and are the actual Elderberries for which the plant is named.
