Hollow Joe Pye Weed (Eutrochium fistulosum)

Eutrochium fistulosum is the scientific name for the native species more commonly known as Hollow Joe Pye Weed which crucially supports rich ecological and faunal networks by providing abundant late‑summer to fall nectar and pollen for native and migratory pollinators, especially native bees, butterflies (including monarchs and swallowtails), and various hoverflies when many other floral resources are dwindling.

Growing well in nearly all soil types, and tolerant of most moisture conditions, Hollow Jow Pye Weed stands tallest of all the Pyes, and does indeed have mostly hollow/pithy stems which are often utilized by native bees to rear their young after the plant is well established and mature.

The tall clumps and coarse stems of Hollow Joe Pye Weed offer shelter and overwintering habitat for beneficial insects and spiders, while its seeds feed songbirds in autumn and winter. The plant’s deep fibrous roots help stabilize soil, improve moisture retention, and enhance wetland and meadow resiliency, and because it is a native species adapted to local hydrology and nutrient cycles, it promotes biodiversity, supports host‑plant relationships, and strengthens ecosystem function in prairie, meadow, and riparian plantings.
