Prairie Blazing Star (Liatris pycnostachya)
Prairie Blazing Star (Liatris pycnostachya)
Liatris pycnostachya is the scientific name for the native plant more commonly known as Prairie Blazing Star, Cattail Gayfeather, Kansas Gayfeather, or Cattail Blazing Star. Prairie Blazing Star is a perennial flowering plant belonging to the expansive Asteraceae family and is native to the tallgrass prairies of the central United States, where it thrives in well-drained soils and full sunlight.
The stems of this Prairie Blazing Star reach 2-5+ ft., with nearly half as a flower spike. The spike has dense, rayless, rose-purple (rarely white), cylindrical, stalkless flower heads on a coarse, hairy, leafy stem. Stamens and styles protrude, giving a fuzzy look. Flowers bloom top-down. The lower stem has short, fuzzy, grass-like leaves.
As with all Blazing Stars, Prairie Blazing Star is a magnet for myriad pollinators
