Tall Larkspur (Delphinium exaltatum)

Sale Price: $2.00 Original Price: $3.00

Tall Larkspur (Delphinium exaltatum)

Delphinium exaltatum, more commonly known as Tall Larkspur provides important ecological and faunal benefits in native prairie and open-woodland restorations: its tall, nectar-rich spikes bloom in early to mid-summer, supplying a valuable food source for long-tongued native bees, bumble bees, as well as butterfly and hummingbird species when other floral resources may be waning.

The plant’s structural height and branching create microhabitats and perching sites for pollinators and small insects, while its deep-rooted habit helps stabilize soils, reduce erosion, and promote soil health through organic matter inputs.

As a native species adapted to local climates and disturbance regimes, D. exaltatum supports greater insect diversity than comparable nonnative ornamentals and contributes to resilient plant communities that sustain higher trophic levels, including insectivorous birds and small mammals.
