Bottle Gentian (Gentiana andrewsii)
Bottle Gentian (Gentiana andrewsii)
Gentiana andrewsii is a distinctive native flowering plant, commonly known as bottle gentian, closed gentian, or closed bottle gentian; it is an herbaceous species in the gentian family, Gentianaceae. This striking wildflower is endemic to northeastern North America, with a range stretching from the Dakotas across to the East Coast and throughout eastern Canada, where it occupies meadows, prairies, and moist open woodlands.
Bottle Gentian grow slowly but live long with very little care once established. Bumblebees, which are strong enough to pry open the closed flowers, serve as their primary pollinators. Cream Gentian blooms earliest in late summer; Bottle and other Gentian species follow, continuing into September and October and supplying late-season color on mostly sunny sites with soils that range from medium-wet to medium-dry.

Germination Needs: 60 Days Cold Stratification, Seed is very small and likes soil contact and a view of the light to germinate. Surface sow and do not cover with more than a dusting if any soil. Keep moist until germination but not soaking, if growing in trays water from the bottom only.
