Cream Gentian (Gentiana flavida)

Gentiana flavida, more commonly called Plain, Pale, White, Yellow, or Cream Gentian, is an herbaceous species of flowering plant in the Gentianaceae family. Cream Gentian bears delicate yellowish‑white flowers that open from clusters on stems rising from its thick, white taproot. It is native to North America, with a range extending from Manitoba and Ontario in the north, southward to include Oklahoma, Arkansas, and parts of North Carolina.

This species resembles Bottle Gentian (Gentiana andrewsii), which has blue flowers and a somewhat less upright habit, and the two share much of the same geographic range. Gentiana flavida begins to bloom a few weeks earlier than Bottle Gentian, and its flowers tend to be more open at the tops. Gentiana flavida can also hybridize with Gentiana andrewsii, producing upright-growing plants that often bear white flowers edged in blue.
