Ditch Stonecrop (Penthorum sedoides)

$3.00

Ditch Stonecrop (Penthorum sedoides)

Ditch Stonecrop belongs to the Crassulaceae family but doesn't have the thick, fleshy leaves typical of other stonecrops. It's also called Star Fruit and Virginia Stonecrop. Native Americans used it to treat many illnesses.

Ditch Stonecrop is an unusual plant with long, narrow leaves that alternate along the stem. At the top, it has clusters of small green-yellow flowers that spread out like octopus tentacles. Later in the season, the flowers turn rusty red-orange as the fruit grows, creating a beautiful late-fall display. It grows best in partial shade to full sun and prefers wet soil. You can find it in ditches, near shorelines, and in marshes. It can spread through underground runners (rhizomes) to form groups if conditions are good.
