False Boneset (Brickellia eupatorioides)
Brickellia eupatorioides is the scientific name for the native plant more commonly referred to as False Boneset. This species is native to North America and belongs to the Asteraceae family, which is known for its diverse and widespread group of flowering plants.
False Boneset is commonly found in a variety of grassland communities. It is notably fire tolerant, allowing it to survive and thrive despite repeated annual burns. Over time, with the occurrence of frequent summer burns, this resilience may lead to an increase in its presence within these ecosystems.
Found in dry to moderately moist prairies as well as other sunny, open habitats, False Boneset can grow to about three feet in height. Its roots, however, extend much deeper—sometimes reaching depths of up to 15 feet—making it an exceptionally effective and powerful force in preventing soil erosion.
With its muted and understated appearance, yet pleasantly subtle scent, its value to both pollinators and people should never be underestimated or overlooked when considering it in the home landscape.
