Prairie Brome (Bromus kalmii)
Prairie Brome (Bromus kalmii)
Bromus kalmii is the scientific name for the plant more commonly called Prairie Brome, or Kalm's Brome; it is a species of brome grass and a native bunchgrass found across the North-Central and Northeastern United States, throughout the Great Lakes region, and into parts of eastern Canada.
Bromus kalmii supports prairie and meadow ecosystems by providing early-season ground cover that reduces soil erosion, improves moisture retention, and stabilizes disturbed sites. Its bunchgrass growth form creates microsites that shelter seedlings of native wildflowers and grasses, enhancing plant community diversity and succession. As a native cool-season grass, it offers forage for small mammals in spring and contributes seed and structural habitat for ground-nesting birds and invertebrates. By integrating into mixed-species seedings, Bromus kalmii helps moderate invasive species establishment through competitive early growth while contributing organic matter and root structure that build soil health and nutrient cycling over time.
