Prairie Coreopsis (Coreopsis palmata)

Coreopsis palmata is the scientific name for the native species more commonly called Prairie Coreopsis which is a vital prairie and savanna wildflower that supports diverse ecological interactions. The bright yellow, open-faced flowers attract a wide range of pollinators such as native bees (including many small solitary and larger generalists), butterflies, and syrphid flies, working to provide important nectar and pollen resources from late spring into summer.

The plant thrives in well-drained prairies, open woods, limestone glades, and roadside remnant habitats, tolerating drought and thin, rocky soils, and it often appears in early successional or disturbed sites where it helps stabilize soil and compete with invasive species. Seed heads provide food for granivorous insects and small birds, while foliage is used as a host or shelter by some specialist moth and butterfly larvae; its presence also contributes to overall insect diversity, which in turn supports higher trophic levels such as insectivorous birds and small mammals.

By fitting into sunny, low-nutrient landscapes and forming loose clumps, Prairie Coreopsis promotes structural heterogeneity that benefits pollinators, ground-nesting bees, and other fauna dependent on open, flower-rich habitats.
