Rough Blazing Star (Liatris aspera)
Rough Blazing Star (Liatris aspera)
Liatris aspera is the scientific name for a native plant more commonly known by several names including Rough Blazing Star, Button Blazing Star, Lacerate Blazing Star, Tall Prairie Blazing Star, or Tall Gayfeather. Rough Blazing Star is a hearty perennial wildflower belonging to the diverse and expansive Asteraceae family. It is found across a broad range of Central to Eastern North America, thriving in various habitats that range from mesic to dry prairie environments and dry savannas.
Liatris aspera is a perennial herb that grows as a single, erect, and unbranched stem, which can reach impressive heights between 3 to 6 feet tall. The leaves are numerous along the stem, arranged alternately and narrowly lanceolate in shape. The lower leaves are larger, often measuring up to 15 inches long and 1 inch wide, and they gradually become smaller and narrower as they climb higher up the plant. The inflorescence is characterized by an erect raceme bearing numerous purple, button-like flower heads that are short-stalked or unstalked. These blooms open in a top-down sequence, typically flowering from mid-August through October. By October to November, plentiful seeds become ripe and ready for dispersal.
Rough Blazing Star is recognized as a pollinator powerhouse, attracting a wide variety of pollinators that represent the best of the pollinating world. Visitors include hummingbirds and a range of butterflies such as Monarchs, Sulfurs, Swallowtails, and Painted Ladies. Additionally, it supports many native bee species, including bumblebees, carpenter bees, sweat bees, mining bees, and leaf-cutting bees, along with various pollinating predators that contribute to the health of local ecosystems.
This plant is native from North Dakota South through Texas, and East all the way to North Carolina where it is listed as present but rare in several counties.
