Early Sunflower (Heliopsis helianthoides)

Heliopsis helianthoides is the scientific name for the native species more commonly known as Early Sunflower, Rough Oxeye, Smooth Oxeye and False Sunflower. It is native to eastern and central North America from Saskatchewan east to Newfoundland and south as far as Texas, New Mexico, and Georgia.

Early Sunflower provides substantial faunal and ecological benefits with its long‑blooming, cheerful daisy‑like flowers supplying abundant nectar and pollen for many native bees, bumblebees, butterflies, and other pollinators throughout mid to late summer.

The seed of Early Sunflower are an extremely valuable late‑season food source for songbirds and small mammals, and the sturdy stems and clump‑forming habit offer perching sites and some shelter for insects and birds, while dry stalks left through winter provide standing cover for overwintering insects and seed‑eating birds

As a deep‑rooted perennial, Early Sunflower helps to stabilize the soil, improve soil structure and assists in water infiltration, while supporting diverse soil microbial communities, all of which contribute to resilient, self‑sustaining prairie and meadow ecosystems.
