Obedient Plant (Physostegia virginiana)
Obedient Plant (Physostegia virginiana)
Physostegia virginiana, commonly known as Obedient Plant, is a hardy native perennial that ranges from eastern Canada down through northern Mexico. It typically grows to a height of 2 to 4 feet, featuring thick, square-shaped stems and narrow, toothed leaves that provide a lush, textured appearance. The plant produces striking pink, tubular flowers that closely resemble snapdragons and are notable for their unique ability to remain in place when gently moved, hence the name "Obedient Plant." After flowering, it forms vase-shaped fruits that contain four small, black seeds, which contribute to its natural propagation.
Notable pollinators that are attracted to Obedient Plant are American Painted Lady Butterflies, Monarch Butterflies, Sulphur Butterflies, Common Buckeye Butterflies, and Swallowtails, as well as Bumble Bees, Green Sweat Bees which will practically camp out in flower heads diligently collecting all the nectar they can manage, Small Sweat Bees and Yellow-Faced Bees.
