Purple Giant Hyssop (Agastache scrophulariifolia)
Purple Giant Hyssop (Agastache scrophulariifolia)
Agastache scrophulariifolia is the scientific name for the plant species more commonly known as Purple Giant Hyssop, and it is a perennial wildflower that grows across much of the United States and into northern Ontario, Canada. Its specific epithet refers to the resemblance of its leaves to those of plants in the genus Scrophularia. Purple Giant Hyssop is highly beneficial to pollinators, attracting bees and butterflies, and is also noted for traditional medicinal uses consistent with many members of the mint family. It typically establishes in disturbed, open, or sunny sites where it faces less competition from aggressive non-native, invasive species.
Agastache scrophulariifolia supports a diverse array of pollinators, attracting long-tongued bees (such as bumble bees and carpenter bees), various solitary native bees, hummingbird moths, butterflies, and occasionally hummingbirds with its nectar-rich, tubular flowers adapted to nectar feeders; its extended bloom period in mid to late summer provides a reliable food source when other natives may be past peak flowering, and its spike-like inflorescences offer easy landing platforms and concentrated nectar rewards that encourage repeat visits, increasing pollen transfer and benefiting both specialist and generalist pollinators in prairie and woodland-edge habitats, while also contributing to overall habitat complexity and seasonal continuity of forage for migrating and resident species.
