Meadow Blazing Star (Liatris ligulistylis)
Liatris ligulistylis is the scientific name for the species more commonly known as Meadow Blazing Star, Northern Plains Blazing Star, or Rocky Mountain Blazing Star and is a flowering plant of the Asteraceae family.
Native to the central United States between Wisconsin and Illinois to the eastern edge of its documented range and into Montana to the west and central Canada to the north, it extends as far south as New Mexico.
Meadow Blazing Star is highly sought after as a nectar plant by many pollinators, including Monarch, Common Wood Nymphs, Great Spangled Fritillary, Painted Lady, and Skipper Butterflies. It hosts the Specialist Bees M. coloradensis and M. vernoniae, it feeds generalist pollinators like Bumble Bees, Leafcutter Bees, Green Sweat Bees and Syrphid Flies.
Blooming in late summer before other members of the aster family, this plant performs best in moderately rich, medium moisture soil, in combination with supporting native grasses like Little Bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium), June Grass (Koeleria macrantha), Rough Dropseed (Sporobolus compositus), Side-Oats Grama (Bouteloua curtipendula) and Virginia Wild Rye (Elymus virginicus) and is excellent when paired with Wild Quinine (Parthenium integrifolium), Great Blue Lobelia (Lobelia siphilitica), Wild Bergamot (Monarda fistulosa), Wild Petunia (Ruellia humilis) and Sweet Coneflower (Rudbeckia subtomentosa)
